I use the domestic realm as a space to host uncanny, dissonant events to which I can apply my own imagined language and narrative. I am interested in the eccentric, unsavoury and terrifying behaviours that occur within the domestic, private realm where individuals most freely pursue their fantasies and leisure. My work attempts to bring these private, intimate spaces to a rigid, conventional public milieu and in so doing confound the relationship between public and private environments. I would like to continue to experiment with the real vs. imaginary within my domestic performance work.
My most recent staged domestic narrative photographs more overtly use tropes or cultural clichés to initiate viewer recognition and in doing so confound expectations through the conflation of notions of the grotesque and the picturesque. These works emulate a highly theatrical aesthetic and employ cinematic conventions; they can be seen to exist as film stills for films that do not exist.
A constant element that has been sustained throughout my art practice has been my own performance. In all of my photographic scenes, I embody the role of both artist/director and model/actor. My interest in the woman’s body as borderless comes to fruition within these works. Holistically, my staged photographs attempt to personify the notion that the female figure is that of a changing figure, she is a frail, unstable form.
